Wonders indeed shall never end as everyday we keep hearing and seeing developments that we never thought could be possible in our era as the Mexican President gruesomely issued an open letter to the Pope seeking and requesting the Catholic Church to apologise to the Mexico’s indeginous population for evangelizing them.
Pope Francis met with Mexico’s president’s wife. She delivered a letter from her husband to the Pope, asking the Church to apologize to Mexico’s indigenous population for evangelizing them.
The request was made in a two-page letter that also asked the Vatican to temporarily return several ancient indigenous manuscripts held in its library, ahead of next year’s 500-year anniversary of the Spanish conquest of Mexico.
In the letter, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also asks the pope to lend Mexico ancient pre-Hispanic Mexican or colonial-era documents.
“The Catholic Church, the Spanish monarchy and the Mexican government should make a public apology for the offensive atrocities that Indigenous people suffered,” the letter states.
“They deserve not just that generous attitude on our part but also a sincere commitment that never again will disrespectful acts be committed against their beliefs and cultures.”
López Obrador requested the return of three codices, including the Codex Borgia, an especially colourful screen-fold book spread across dozens of pages that depicts gods and rituals from ancient central Mexico.
