It was indeed an interesting weekend to behold as some of the different dioceses across the globe had their priestly ordinations amidst the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
On Saturday and Sunday we also witnessed another sacerdotal (priestly) event and it’s culmination in the celebration of the First Holy Mass by the newly ordained. This event took place in Minna Diocese.
On Saturday the Minna Diocese ordained seven Deacons to the sacerdotal (priestly) order, by their bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Martin Igwe Uzokwu at St. Michael’s Cathedral Minna.
The event which began with the holy Mass was quite glamorous and mouth watering as the bishop handled the whole celebration so perfectly that people who came for the occasion were edified.
During the mass, the candidates were presented and examined before the altar and the bishop. The bishop in his homily dwelt on the four promises they were going to make viz: celibacy, poverty, obedience and prayer.
For in celibacy, the bishop said, that they were to sacrifice the natural gifts of marriage and children. This is a sign of one’s dedication to Christ the Lord for the sake of the kingdom of God.
In poverty, they were meant to live simply, giving up lucrative possessions and then focus on serving God’s people.
By obedience, they were to obey the bishop as well his successors, thus, sacrificing their self determination. He charged them to this for the good of the church.
By prayer, the bishop told them that a priest should be a man prayer for through it one establishes ones relationship with his God.
After saying these, he urged them to follow the example of Christ the chief high priest who came and lay down his life for his sheep.
After the mass, the bishop thanked all and sundry who came for the celebration for making out time amidst their tight schedules. He prays the good Lord to bless and protect them always. Amen
Yesterday was the height of it all as our newly ordained priests celebrated their first solemn mass of thanksgiving to God for this great privilege of ascending into his high altar as priests. They blessed all present and wished everyone good things and blessings upon blessings.
The celebration came to an end with a warm reception after the mass which the different parishes organized in their honour and after which a token amount was given to them including a car to help them in their ministry.
Please friends let us wish them a well resounding congratulations for it is not easy.
